Rice to attend USAF academy
US Senator Byron Dorgan has nominated John Rice, a senior at Rice
Home School, for appointment to the US Air Force Academy at Colorado
Springs, Colo. John is the son of John and Barb Rice of Maddock.
Upon successful completion of a final physical and medical
examination, Rice will receive a four-year, tuition-free appointment
to his selected military academy.
Legion oratorical contest
Personnel involved in the 3rd District American Legion Oratorical
Contest held in Rolette December 10 are pictured. Left to right,
back row, are Dave Daeley of Maddock, 3rd District American Legion
Commander; Lonnie Nelson of Maddock, Divisional Oratorical Chairman;

place. Arlene will advance to the regional competition in Maddock on
January 14.
Leeds readers
"Driven to Read" is the theme for Children's Book Week, which was
held November 14-19 at the Leeds Public Library. The Alfredian Club
conducted a poster contest for the grades. Winners in each grade
were given a monetary prize and all participants were given a
bookmark. The posters were displayed at the United Community Bank
for the week. Winners from each class were, left to right, front

Nifty Fifty project
Leeds fourth graders are participating in a project called "The
Nifty Fifty." The purpose of this project is to communicate with a
fourth grade class in each of the 50 states, learn some interesting
statistics about other states and gather, compile and share
information about North Dakota.

Lady Indians and Lions have 2-1
showings
Adams-Edmore was the top-ranked team in a preseason coaches' poll in
District 8 girls basketball. Four Winds-Warwick was the No. 2-ranked
team in District 7.
Dakota Prairie (Tolna, Petersburg, Michigan, McVille and Aneta)
defeated both of those teams en route to the Lake Region
Invitational Girls Basketball Tournament championship at the Sports
Center in Devils Lake.
The Dakota Prairie Knights have a stingy defense. Jill Duchscherer
is a key to their defense because she can cover a lot of area and it
seems like she never gets tired. She is the daughter of Minnewaukan
natives Deb and Dale Duchscherer of Aneta.

The Four Winds-Warwick Lady Indians won the first tournament game on
Dec. 1 against Lakota with a score of 49-43. Lakota led most of the
first half, but couldn't hold on down the stretch.

Against Adams-Edmore, the Minnewaukan-Leeds Lions fell behind 24-6
after one quarter and struggled the rest of the way (63-39).

In the second semifinal game Adams-Edmore lost a close one to Dakota

Starkweather-Munich was outgunned by Lakota 42-27 in the first
consolation ball game.

Larimore 37
The Minnewaukan-Leeds Lions rebounded from their opening round loss
to top Larimore 62-37 in consolation play.
The Lions were led by Jordan Callahan, whose inside play was
impossible for the Polar Bears to stop. She finished with 27, but
she was the only Minnewaukan-Leeds player who reached double
figures.

The Four Winds-Warwick Lady Indians played Dakota Prairie in the
championship game on Dec. 3, with the Knights coming out on the
winning side 57-36. The Knights had a 21-6 run in the second quarter
to open things up and set the stage for the second half.

In the fifth-place game, the Minnewaukan-Leeds Lions' offense got
into gear for a 60-48 win over Lakota. This was the Lions' third
victory this season.

Motocross winners
Three area boys with Benson County connections received awards for
their final point standings in the North Dakota Motocross
Association at its 30th annual awards banquet held at the Seven Seas
in Mandan, October 29. Season pictures and race finishes can be
viewed at www.ndmamx.com. On the left is Steven Hausmann, who won
second place in the 250 C class. He is the son of Karen and Jim
Hausmann of Churchs Ferry. Grandparents are Janice and Rodney
Hausmann and Joel and Donna Storsteen of Churchs Ferry. In the
center is Derek Belle, who won fourth place in the 125 C class and
third in the open C class. He is the son of Cheryl and Melvin Belle
of Cando. Grandparents are Clarine and Jim Whalen of Leeds and Ella
Mae Belle of Cando. On the right is Tayler Belle, who won second
place in the 50 A class. He is the son of Laura and Rob Belle of
Langdon and the grandson of Ella and Dave Strinden of Leeds and Ella
Mae Belle of Cando.
Earn scholarships
Jade Frier (left) and Jeremy Robertson (right) each received $200
from the Marcy Young McKay scholarship fund for the fall semester at
Cankdeska Cikana (Little Hoop) Community College in Fort Totten. In
the center is Phillip John Young, brother of Marcie Young McKay, one
of the first Spirit Lake tribal members to graduate (1977) from the
college. The $200 scholarship is awarded to one male and one female
sophomore full-time student who have a cumulative grade point
average of at least 2.0 and demonstrate financial need. Jade is the
daughter of Anita Frier and John Posey. She is enrolled in the
natural resources curriculum and plans to pursue a bachelor's degree
in natural resources. Jeremy Robertson is the son of Muriel
Robertson and Jeremiah Robertson. He is pursuing a computer science
