Bridge nears completion
This bridge is being built about three miles south of Minnewaukan
for new US 281. The bridge is located just west of Round Lake on the
high ground. A second bridge about half a mile south of this bridge
is also under construction. Nice weather has been a boon to area
contractors.

Meets princess
Arnikka Thompson of Leeds, right, met Princess Martha Louise of
Norway, left, at the Norsk Hostfest in Minot last week. The princess
autographed her book, "Why Kings and Queens Don't Wear Crowns."
Arnikka is the daughter of Tony and Carol Thompson of Leeds.
FFA chapter takes top spot
The A.S. Gibbens FFA Chapter of Maddock was selected District 3
Chapter of the Day at the FFA District Leadership Conference in
Rugby on October 10.
Seven FFA Chapters participated and competed in the District 3 FFA
Leadership Conference. Maddock received a total of 75 points to
Rugby's 72 points to receive the honor. Points are based on awards
received in the various leadership contests held at the conference.
The parliamentary procedure team, consisting of John T. Rice,
president; Elisa Buehler, vice president; Renae Slater, secretary;
Michelle Olson, treasurer; Kassandra Griffin, reporter; Heidi Simon,
sentinel; and Brian Johnson, student advisor, was second high team
and received a gold award.
All officers received a gold award with Elisa Buehler being selected
as vice president officer of the day.
The FFA Quiz Team was second high team and received a gold award.
Team members included John. T. Rice, high individual in the contest;
Kimberly Randle, third high individual; Isaac Engels, seventh high
individual; and Michelle Olson, ninth high individual. All quiz
members received gold awards and will participate in the State FFA
Quiz Contest at the State FFA Convention in June.
Anne Backstrom was high individual in the demonstration contest and
will go on to state. Isaac Engels was high individual in the
prepared public speaking contest and will go on to state. John T.
Rice was third high individual in the extemporaneous public speaking
contest and received a gold award. Andy Backstrom was third high
individual in the FFA Creed Contest and received a gold award. Andy
Backstrom and Beau Buehler received gold awards in the Greenhand
Quiz Contest with Stephanie Rieger receiving a silver award. The
Greenhand Quiz Team received a silver award. Isaac Engels was
selected District 3 ambassador and will represent District 3 in the
State FFA Ambassador Contest at the State FFA Convention.
This is the 4th year in a row the A.S. Gibbens FFA Chapter of
Maddock has been selected District 3 Chapter of the Day and retained
the traveling plaque.

Bridge being built
Concrete supports for a second bridge in the valley between Round
Lake and Long Lake about three miles south of Minnewaukan are in
place and work will soon begin on the bridge bed. The two bridges
will carry travelers on new US 281. |
